UX Designer


Contract (inside IR35)
Location: London although travel may be required (remote during Covid-19)

The role …
We are looking for a UX Designer with 5+ years experience in digital service and product design to work with our Central Government client on a major project to provide gigabit broadband speed availability to all homes and businesses across the UK.
You will be a great listener and communicator with a creative, structured and logical approach to problem solving and you will have experience working within multidisciplinary agile teams to build user-centric services.
We are specifically looking for pragmatic people with an appreciation of both business and user needs, who are happy to carry out a range of user-centred design activities including user research, user interaction design, content design and usability testing.
  • Support the planning and and execution of user research activities for BDUK to understand the various user needs for digital services that are being developed to support the UK Gigabit and UK Mobile Programmes
  • Ensure that the DDaT team takes a user-centred, evidence-based approach to discovery, service design and delivery – discovery, alpha and beta activities 
  • Ensure that product journey’s are clearly documented and available to development teams and the wider BDUK organisation.
  • Create high level interaction designs and the necessary content to support and guide development teams in required interaction functionality, styling, and compliance with Government Digital Service standards.
  • Support and direct the team to prepare for and pass necessary GDS service assessments
  • Support, coordinate and direct (as required) other researchers, designers and analysts involved in the discovery and alpha work
  • Document all research output using BDUK’s prefered documentation tools and ensure that research and design documentation is kept up to date.
Required Experience
  • Working in complex transformation programmes that deliver digital and data solutions, ideally in Public Sector
  • Leading and directing the work of remote teams, translating prototypes into working software
  • Experience in helping organisations adopt a user-centric approach to product / service design and development and embedding these practices into their agile workflow
  • Experience of GDS user research methodologies and GDS assessments
  • Ability to quickly grasp complex problems a team is trying to solve, and define user needs through supporting research activities
  • Experience of defining user profiles / personas, high-level user journeys, service blueprints to understand the ‘big picture’ and ensure joined-up experiences.
  • Experience of defining more granular level user journeys and using appropriate wireframing / prototyping techniques and content designs to test concepts and support user stories consumed by the development team.
  • Experience with the GDS Design System and Service Standard to inform designs and support development activities.
  • Experience of working in Agile delivery environments.
